Nýsta ek niðr;
Nam ek upp rúnar | ǿpandi nam,
Fell ek aftr þaðan

fehu, uruz, thurisaz, ansuz, raido
kenaz, gebo, wunjo, hagalaz
naudiz, isa, jera, eiwaz, perthro,
algiz ,sowulo, tiwas, berkano
ehwaz, mannaz, laguz, ingwaz
dagas, othala

of rúnar heyrða ek dǿma,
né of ráðum þǫgðu

Mál er at þylja
þular stóli á
Urðar brunni at.
Sá ek ok þagða'k,
Sá ek ok hugða'k,
Hlýdda ek á manna mál;

Of rúnar heyrða ek dǿma,
Né of ráðum þǫgðu
Háva hǫllu at,
Háva hǫllu í,
Heyrða ek segja svá:

I took up the runes | Screaming I took them,
And forthwith back I fell

I heard tell of runes, | nor were counsels silent,

It is time to chant | from the chanter's stool;
By the wells of Urth,
I saw and was silent, | I saw and thought,
I listened to speech on man.

I heard tell of runes, | nor were counsels silent,
At the hall of Oðinn,
In the hall of Oðinn;
Such was the speech I heard.
